Where the Caramel Macchiato came from
Introduced 1996
Starbucks launched the Caramel Macchiato in March 1996 to mark the company's 25th anniversary. It was meant to run for a few weeks; it sold well enough to join the permanent menu within the year and has never left.
- Product developer Hannah Su and her team spent around ten months on it and went through more than thirty versions.
- The hardest part was the caramel: they needed a sauce that tasted right and would also sit on top of the foam instead of sinking through it.
