Burger King began test-marketing the Impossible Whopper around St. Louis in April 2019 and took it nationwide that August. It is the standard Whopper build with a plant-based patty in place of the beef.

The patty gets its colour and the way it bleeds from heme — specifically soy leghemoglobin, the molecule found in the roots of soy plants, produced by genetically engineered yeast. Heme is what gives blood its red colour.
It is a plant-based burger rather than a diet one: at 630 calories it sits 40 below a standard Whopper without cheese.
