Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy's in Columbus, Ohio on 15 November 1969. The single, double and triple are the same square patty stacked one, two or three times.

The patties are square for two reasons: more of them fit on a griddle than round ones, and the corners hang over the edge of the bun, which makes the burger look bigger than it is.
