Where the Egg McMuffin came from
Introduced 1972
Herb Peterson invented the Egg McMuffin in 1972 at a franchise in Goleta, California, with his assistant Donald Greadel. He was trying to approximate eggs benedict — English muffin, Canadian bacon, egg — in a form McDonald's could serve quickly.
- Ray Kroc called it "a crazy idea — a breakfast sandwich", and then watched it open up the breakfast trade for the company.
- The egg's distinctive round shape comes from cooking it in a ring mould.
