About the World Famous Fries
McDonald's fries have been reformulated more than once, and the two changes people still argue about are both documented.
- Until 1990 they were cooked in a mixture of about 93% beef tallow and 7% cottonseed oil. The switch to vegetable oil is the reason people who ate them before 1990 insist they tasted different — they did.
- They stopped being cut fresh in store in 1967, when Ray Kroc contracted the J.R. Simplot Company to supply them frozen. Simplot had commercialised the frozen chip in the 1940s.
